Although embedded field testing is used in the current assessments, this method cannot be used in the initial field test year for the next generation because (1) the content of the new standards is very different and (2) a high volume of items needs to be field tested.
Common Core/Essential Standard testing may no longer consist of just multiple choice questions once testing is computer-based. Additional question types will include multiple choice and technology enhanced questions as well as multiple choice and gridded response questions.
Gridded-response items require a student to produce a response rather than to select a response from several options. Online assessments will include TE items and drag and drop functionality. TE items are intended to improve the authenticity, measurement precision, or cognitive rigor of items.
